Keyboard Shortcuts

If you’re using MTG Carpenter on a computer with a physical keyboard (rather than on a touchscreen device), then you have the option to take keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts let you perform certain tasks in the app by pressing designated keys, which can help you interact with MTG Carpenter faster than by a mouse or trackpad alone.

Special keyboard shortcuts are available in these contexts:

  • Workspace mode menu
  • List Editor
  • Stats Analyzer
  • Draw Simulator

(There are none for the Deck Exporter.)

The next subchapters define all of the keyboard shortcuts in this app.

Workspace Mode Menu’s Keyboard Shortcuts

In MTG Carpenter’s deck workspace, you can switch between any of the four workspace modes through keyboard shortcuts. To do so, take one of the following shortcuts while you’re on any page of the deck workspace:

Key PressActivates Mode
1List Editor
2Stats Analyzer
3Draw Simulator
4Deck Exporter

If you take any of those shortcuts for the mode that’s already activated, then the page gets scrolled to reveal the mode menu if it’s out of view.

List Editor’s Keyboard Shortcuts

The List Editor mode responds to lots of keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts, divided between three categories, are explained in the next subchapters:

  • Highlighting a row
  • Actions to highlighted row
  • Other List Editor actions

A card list in the Editor comprises one row for each card name in your deck. A single row at a time can be highlighted via keyboard shortcuts. Whenever a row is highlighted, the card name in that row has its corresponding image shown, and you can take other keyboard shortcuts to do actions to the name in the highlighted row.

The majority of the List Editor’s keyboard shortcuts do actions that in some way involve the currently highlighted row in the card list. For the shortcuts of that kind, if you’d take one of them when no row is highlighted yet, then the row associated with the currently displayed card image becomes highlighted.

Highlighting a Row

To highlight a different row in the List Editor’s active card list, take any of these keyboard shortcuts:

Key PressEffect
WMove the highlight to the adjacent row above.
SMove the highlight to the adjacent row below.
EscStop highlighting the currently highlighted row.
Shift+WMove the highlight to a distant row above.*
Shift+SMove the highlight to a distant row below.*

* Specifically, the distance moved is equal to half of the card list’s total number of rows, to a maximum of 6 rows.

If the highlighted row is the row positioned at either the top end or the bottom end of the card list, and you take a shortcut to move the highlight where it couldn’t be moved farther in that direction, then instead the shortcut highlights the row at the list’s opposite end.

Actions to Highlighted Row

The following keyboard shortcuts do actions that affect the particular card name in the currently highlighted row of the card list.

Key PressEffect
AToggle the symbols on the card name’s tag.
ERaise the card name’s quantity by 1.
DLower the card name’s quantity by 1.
FMove 1 of the card name into your deck’s inactive card group (i.e., from primary to secondary, or vice versa).
CView the card image up closer.
ZView the image of the card’s opposite face (if double-faced).
Shift+AToggle the symbols on the card name’s tag in reverse order.
Shift+ERaise the card name’s quantity by 4.
Shift+DLower the card name’s quantity by 4.
Shift+FMove all of the card name at once into the inactive group.
Shift+COpen the card’s page on your preferred external website in a new browser tab.
Other List Editor Actions

The following keyboard shortcuts work in the List Editor regardless of whether a card list row is highlighted or not.

Key PressEffect
QShow or hide the list organizer’s menu.
RToggle the active card group between primary and secondary.
XFocus onto the card adder’s text field to enter a query. (Press Esc to cancel.)
Shift+XOpen a page to an advanced card search in a new browser tab.
Shift+?Open a dialog box that outlines the List Editor’s keyboard shortcuts.

Stats Analyzer’s Keyboard Shortcut

The Stats Analyzer mode responds to only one keyboard shortcut:

Key PressEffect
EscStop the active data filter.

Draw Simulator’s Keyboard Shortcuts

The Draw Simulator mode responds to these keyboard shortcuts:

Key PressEffect
SpaceDraw a card.
RRestart as a new testing round.
CView the card image up closer.*
ZView the image of the card’s opposite face (if double-faced).*
Shift+COpen the displayed card’s page on your preferred external website in a new browser tab.*

* This effect is the same in the List Editor’s matching keyboard shortcut.

Caveats on Keyboard Shortcuts

Be aware that MTG Carpenter can’t do actions by keyboard shortcuts while your web browser is actively focused on any kind of text field, like the ones of the card adder or a card quantity in the List Editor, or your browser’s web address bar. Under that condition, pressing a letter or digit key will enter that key’s character into the text field instead of doing the shortcut’s action.

If you’d want to take a keyboard shortcut but your browser is currently focusing on a text field, then you must first stop the browser’s focus. You can do that by pressing the Esc key or by clicking anywhere else on the page.

The app’s scheme of keyboard shortcuts is designed for left-handed ergonomics on the standard English-language layout of keys (“QWERTY”). If your keyboard has a different layout, the shortcuts probably won’t be so ergonomic or logical.
