✨ NEW FEATURE: Deck Format Selection ✨
Now you can assign your decks to Magic gameplay formats. There are currently 26 formats available as options—Commander, Standard, Pauper, Oathbreaker, Premodern, Cube Draft, and more. And if those aren’t enough, you can even make custom formats.
A deck’s format is indicated in the deck workspace page’s header. Click the format’s name there to go to the Format Selection page, where you can designate your deck’s format.
Depending on which format you’ve designated for your deck, certain features in the deck workspace will adjust accordingly, including:
- Quantity limits per card name
- Warnings about your deck exceeding the format’s maximum total card count
- The appearance of the “Exclude star-tagged cards” checkbox in the Draw Simulator (meant for Commander-style formats only)
- The names of the deck’s pair of primary and secondary card groups—either “main” with “sideboard,” or “deck” with “considering”
The statistic about the number of card names contained in your deck has been removed from the deck workspace header. You can still view that data in the Stats Analyzer mode: It’s in the “Names” table, as a number between parentheses beside the table’s heading.
Bug fix: In Card List Entry, if you had tried to submit a very long list of cards, it would be rejected. The Card List Entry form now accepts up to 800 unique card names and up to 10,000 typographic characters.
Various minor optimizations, bug fixes, user interface improvements, and graphical tweaks.
Note that the User Guide’s content hasn’t yet been updated to reflect these changes, but it will be soon.

Bug fix: If you had tried to download a deck archive file from the Archive Decks page, some operating systems would’ve automatically converted the file’s normal “.deck” file extension to another extension instead.
Additionally, on the Create Deck page, you can now open a deck archive file with a “.deck.json” or “.deck.txt” file extension.
Minor bug fixes and graphical tweaks.
July 26
Fixed a major bug for iPhones: Only in web browsers on Apple iOS, if you had tried to download a TXT file or deck archive file via the Deck Exporter, then nothing had happened instead. (If you don’t use an iPhone, you likely never encountered this issue.)
Bug fix: In Card List Entry, if you had assigned a quantity of 0 to a card name (i.e., to remove that card name from your deck), then that quantity would’ve automatically changed to 1 instead.
Minor graphical tweaks.

Made several graphical adjustments, especially involving tweaks to colors and the whole appearance of card tags.
Minor user interface improvements.
July 21
In the deck workspace header’s “Other Deck Actions” menu, the “Change card image links” option has been renamed “Customize external sites.”
✨ Change Card Search Button’s Destination ✨
The dialog box opened from the “Customize external sites” option has now gained a new set of options that lets you choose your preferred search engine for Magic cards. The available options are Gatherer, Scryfall, and TCGplayer. The option to disable links has also been removed.
Gatherer has replaced Scryfall as the default destination for the List Editor’s Card Search button. You can change it to Scryfall or TCGplayer with the “Customize external sites” setting, as described above.
Performance optimizations, minor bug fixes, and visual tweaks.
July 17
A logo has been designed for MTG Carpenter. App favicons and launcher icons have been updated to match the logo.
Other visual improvements have been made—including, in the app header, a redesign of the icon of the Create Deck button.

Various optimizations, graphical tweaks, and user experience improvements.
July 3
✨ New Options for Replicating Archived Decks ✨
On the Create Deck page, when you open a deck archive file, if the replicating archived decks match the name of any of your existing decks, you’re now presented with some options on how you want to handle that situation.
Formerly, the conflicted replicating decks would be automatically renamed whether you liked it or not. That’s still an option, but now you also have the options to replace your existing decks or to skip the replication of the conflicted decks.
Minor bug fixes and graphical tweaks.
June 30
Some chapters of the User Guide have been revised and expanded with more information.
Assorted minor improvements to the user interface.
June 22

✨ Deck Exporter Preferences ✨
In the Deck Exporter, you can now control how your card lists are formatted whenever you export them as plain text. Access these settings by clicking the “Text List Preferences” button in the Exporter.
For the List Editor’s card adder and Card List Entry’s form, you can now indicate a card name from a specific set by entering the set’s code after a semicolon. (For example, “Counterspell; 6ED”)
Parentheses and square brackets continue to be accepted for this purpose too. The vertical line character, however, is no longer accepted.
In the Stats Analyzer, the data filter’s notification banner has been repositioned from above the array of data tables to beneath them.
Various minor graphical adjustments.
June 18
Greatly improved the app’s stability. If you’ve experienced crashes or slowdowns during the past couple of weeks when using this app, those issues should now rarely or never happen anymore.

✨ Analyzer Table Row Counts ✨ – In the Stats Analyzer, in the heading of almost every table, it now shows the number of currently available rows contained in the table.
Fixed bugs in which certain unusual cards had failed to be added to decks if you tried.
Various minor graphical tweaks.
Minor optimizations and bug fixes.
June 10
✨ Card Set Codes on Card Bars ✨
In the List Editor’s and Draw Simulator’s card lists, the part on a card bar that used to be known as the rarity symbol is now called the collector symbol.
The collector symbol still indicates the card’s rarity through certain colors, as before (i.e., silver for uncommon). However, instead of the symbol displaying a single letter to denote rarity (like “M” for mythic rare), the collector symbol now displays the code of the Magic set that the card has been printed in.
Additionally, if you hover your mouse pointer over the collector symbol, a tooltip will appear, showing the set’s full name and the card’s collector number in that set.
For returning users who’ve made decks before this release, these new features will require a new version of your decks’ card data. Each existing card’s data will update automatically when you show the card’s image in the List Editor.
✨ Sort by Set and Collector Number ✨
In the List Editor’s list organizer tool, a new sorting method has been added: “Set and Number.” This method sorts cards primarily by their Magic product set, and secondarily by their collector number within each set.
Furthermore, the appearance of the list organizer’s option menu has been slightly redesigned.
Fixed a bug involving foreign-language cards.
Improved app stability.
June 5
Bug fix: In the Draw Simulator’s drawn card list, if you had tried to attach or detach a tag to a card, then your testing round would’ve abruptly restarted. This no longer happens.
Improved app stability and performance.
Various minor bug fixes and graphical tweaks.
June 3
Various optimizations, user experience improvements, and bug fixes.
May 31
Minor bug fixes, optimizations, and user interface enhancements.
May 30
✨ Change Card Images’ Links ✨
You can now select the external website that card images (in the List Editor and Draw Simulator) link to. Your options are TCGplayer, Scryfall, and Gatherer, as well as the option to disable image links.
To access this setting, go to any deck workspace page, click the “More Deck Actions” button, and from the appearing menu, click the “Change card image links” option.
✨ Add Cards with Gatherer URLs ✨
The List Editor’s card adder tool now can accept URLs of cards’ pages on Gatherer.
Bug fix: Since a recent update, some Scryfall card page URLs submitted in the card adder had been incorrectly rejected even when they were valid. This issue is fixed now.
Minor user interface adjustments, optimizations, and bug fixes.
May 29
Bug fix: For card images printed in languages other than English, they had been incorrectly replaced with their English versions under certain conditions.
Bug fix: In Card List Entry, a submitted commander card had failed to automatically be given the star shape tag under certain conditions.
Bug fix: In the List Editor and Draw Simulator, you can hold the shift key to switch to the alternate actions of certain user interface buttons. Under certain conditions, the shift key’s effect would get “stuck” despite releasing the key. This should no longer happen.
May 28
If you click a card image (except if the image is in a language other than English), you’ll open that card’s page on TCGplayer instead of Scryfall. This change will happen gradually for existing cards in your decks, so you may not experience it on all cards immediately.
Performance improvements and bug fixes.
May 23
Bug fix: On some web browsers, in the List Editor’s card adder tool, sometimes it would’ve automatically submitted your query before you finished typing. This issue has been resolved.
Bug fix: Fixed a regression on the Card List Entry Results page in which the copyable entries to retry hadn’t been displayed properly as a one-entry-per-line list.
Expanded the app’s Privacy Policy and the User Guide’s Deck Exporter chapter regarding TCGplayer affiliation.
May 20
✨ Buy Your Custom Deck on TCGplayer ✨
A new feature has been added to the Deck Exporter mode, allowing you to purchase the whole decks you’ve built in MTG Carpenter at the online store TCGplayer.
MTG Carpenter has recently affiliated with TCGplayer. You’re not required to buy anything from there, but if you were planning on shopping at TCGplayer anyway, then the owner of MTG Carpenter will get a little slice of the sale, and at no extra cost to you.
Minor tweaks have been made to the user interface of the Deck Exporter.
May 18
✨ Specify Card Prints ✨
For card names that have been reprinted or have alternative versions, you can now specify the particular print you prefer, without needing to use a Scryfall card page URL (though that’s still an option).
Both in the List Editor’s card adder tool and on the Card List Entry form, you can enter a card name’s set code in square brackets, and optionally follow with the card’s collector number in the set, to add that card of that specific print to your deck. Additionally, you can enter 2- or 3-letter language code to get the card in a print in an available language other than English.
Various user experience enhancements, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.
May 6
The app’s performance has been greatly improved regarding retrieval of new data for cards. Whenever you add a new card to a deck, the app should generally load the card’s data faster than before. Additionally, the occasional error messages about Scryfall’s web servers being unresponsive should be much less frequent. This change is most noticeable in Card List Entry, but affects the card adder in the List Editor too.
Minor graphical tweaks.
May 1
Bug fix: In the Draw Simulator, when shuffling your deck under certain circumstances, your deck during the test would gain an extra of every card. This incorrect effect no longer occurs.
The deck action Duplicate Deck has been enhanced. Now when you click that option in the “Other Deck Actions” menu, instead of showing a dialog box, you’re directed to a page on which you can make a new deck that’s a copy of your currently open deck.
Various graphical tweaks and minor bug fixes.
April 28
Major bug fix: In the Mozilla Firefox browser, the app now properly preserves your data after the browser is closed.
The tool in the List Editor formerly named the “card sorter” has been renamed the “list organizer.”
Decorated the Stats Analyzer and Deck Exporter modes, and the “invalid card name” error dialog box, with card illustrations.
Minor bug fixes and various graphical tweaks.
April 21
Bug fix: In the List Editor, if you had set a card name’s quantity to 0, then the card name would’ve failed to disappear from the card list under some conditions.
Minor UI tweaks and minor optimizations.
April 20
Various graphical tweaks and minor bug fixes.
April 19
Numerous graphical changes to the user interface.
Bug fixes.
In the Stats Analyzer, the category known as “Power/Toughness” has been renamed “Base Power/Toughness.” This change provides a more accurate description of how this data is calculated.

The Privacy Policy and Terms of Service pages have been revised. (There are no major changes, but they’ve been expanded with some more details.)
Various graphical tweaks to the user interface.
April 9
Whenever a new update for the app has just been installed, the notification banner about that will no longer appear. Release notes will still be provided, which you can access by clicking the newly included “Release Notes” link in the app’s page footer.
Adjusted some of the colors of app elements.
Bug fixes and optimizations.
April 8
This app’s system of storing user data has been replaced with a new system that handles data more efficiently and has larger capacity. Users who have a massive collection of decks, or users who are on slow computer hardware, should see that the app has gotten a boost in performance.
(Note that all your deck data is still stored offline in your web browser, as before.)
Other significant app optimizations have been made.
Minor visual tweaks.
April 3
Fixed some broken links in the User Guide, and various other minor bug fixes and optimizations.
April 2
As this Release Notes page was starting to get overly long, it’s now split into multiple pages of notes by year. To view the pages of notes from other years, links to them are provided at the bottom of any Release Notes page.
A few adjustments have been made to the app’s user interface, including making the base font size very slightly smaller.
Updated the app’s favicon.

A dialog box will conditionally appear with some tips for you on how to apply card tags more efficiently.
Various app optimizations.
March 30
Minor user-interface enhancements, bug fixes, and optimizations.
March 29
✨ App Renamed and Relocated ✨
Due to rising popularity, this app has far outgrown its original purpose as a little experiment in JavaScript programming. So, it’s time to start treating it for what it’s become: a professional-quality utility for Magic: The Gathering players.
Adapting to this new identity, the app’s name has been changed to be more evocative as well as shorter: “MTG Carpenter.” (Formerly the name was “MTG Deck Builder by Iristorm Design.”)
Additionally, this app has migrated onto its own dedicated web domain, mtgcarpenter.com. (Formerly it was at magic.iristormdesign.com.) If you have the app’s old URL in your web browser’s bookmarks/favorites, you should replace it with the current one now.
MTG Carpenter has inherited all the earlier release notes about the app when it had been under its “MTG Deck Builder” name.
March 22
A few notable changes have been made for the Draw Simulator:
Whenever starting a round, you now draw your full starting hand at once instead of always just 1 card.
Holding Shift while clicking the Draw button now draws 20 cards (instead of 10) at once.
Holding Shift while clicking the Restart button now also automatically draws a new starting hand.
Various minor visual enhancements have been made to the Draw Simulator’s user interface.
When the app starts up, it now shows a loading screen. If the app is already loaded in the latest version as you open the app, then the loading screen will be visible for only a second.
Various optimizations and bug fixes.
March 18
Improved various aspects of the user interface on the “Delete Decks” and “Archive Decks” pages.
Bug fixes and optimizations.
March 17
In the Stats Analyzer, the Types category table has gained new data rows that account for permanent, non-permanent, and noncreature spells.
Various minor enhancements to the app’s user interface.

The app now lets you optionally snooze warnings about removing cards from your deck.
Modified the appearance of checkbox UI elements to have a card tap style of animation.
Many code optimizations.
Various minor user interface enhancements.
Minor bug fixes.
March 9
Whenever you attach a tag to a card name, if your deck already has at least one card name tagged with a star shape, then the sequence of tag symbols adjusts so that the star shape is the last symbol option instead of the first.
Various minor bug fixes and graphical tweaks.
March 8
Bug fixes involving card tags on old decks.
March 7
✨ EXPANDED OPTIONS FOR CARD TAGS! ✨
The elements of the user interface that had referred to “star labels” are now called “tags.”
While a card’s tag can still depict a star shape like before if you want, now you can choose from any of four other symbols to display instead, which you may use for any purpose. Click repeatedly on a tag to cycle through its various symbols.
See the User Guide for more details about card tags.
Minor bug fixes and optimizations.
February 24
Significant performance optimizations.
Minor user interface improvements.
Minor bug fixes.
February 22
In Card List Entry, the way the app handles repeated card names has changed. Now if you include a particular card name more than once within a list, then the app combines the quantities of each instance of that name. (Formerly, the app had ignored all but the first instance of a repeated card name.)
In Card List Entry, the form validation has been loosened slightly to accept more non-standard card entries.
Bug fixes and performance optimizations.
Graphical improvements.
February 21
Bug fix: In Card List Entry, your submitted form would have been wrongly rejected if it included the full names of some double-faced cards.
Bug fix: The notification banner for app updates had failed to appear under some conditions.
Minor performance optimizations and stability improvements.
Various graphical tweaks.
February 19
✨ Export All Decks to Text Document ✨
In the Deck Exporter, the effect of the “Export as Text Document” button has been enhanced. Now when you click it, a dialog box will appear, asking you whether you want to export either just the currently open deck (the original effect), or your entire collection of decks at once.
The card sorter’s option menu has been partly redesigned with a new layout. The buttons for the sorting methods that users select the most frequently—name, type, mana color, and mana value—are enlarged and positioned at the upper portion of the menu.
Added a “Start a New Deck” button on the home page.
Various graphical tweaks, and minor optimizations.
February 17
On the Card List Entry page for a deck, if you’ve entered any text into the entry form before submitting it, then that text will be temporarily saved in the form in case you navigate to another page and then return to the same deck’s Card List Entry.
Various graphical tweaks, minor bug fixes.
February 16
✨ List Entry Accepts Unspecified Quantities ✨
On a deck’s Card List Entry page, as you enter a list, you now have the option to leave out the quantity number for any card name, and still be able to submit your list. If you do, then each card name without a quantity number will be assigned a quantity of 1 by default. You may find this feature convenient for decks designed for Commander or other singleton game formats.
Various minor improvements, optimizations, and bug fixes have been made to how Card List Entry processes lists. Now it’s a little more flexible to users’ entries and less likely to throw errors.
In the Deck Exporter, for card names in plain-text lists, all curly apostrophes are now substituted for straight apostrophes. This ensures better compatibility with some online Magic card stores.
Minor graphical tweaks.
February 12
Performance optimizations.
Minor graphical tweaks.
February 9
Several minor graphical changes have been made, mostly involving color adjustments.
In the List Editor’s card adder, whenever you submit a card name or the “#random” code, once the queried card has been loaded, the card adder’s text field now automatically regains focus. This allows you to quickly submit another query without needing to click the text field again.
(If you’d want to take a keyboard shortcut while the card adder’s text field has focus, press the Esc key to stop the focus.)
The card adder’s handling of the random card query now can potentially retrieve cards from Universes Beyond sets.
Bug fix: In the Stats Analyzer, the data filter for mana values had failed to activate for some spells with a mana value of 0.
February 2
Bug fixes.
February 1
Some bug fixes and graphical enhancements, especially in the Stats Analyzer.
January 31
Whenever you filter data in the Stats Analyzer, the table rows for filtered-out cards now always remain in place but appear dimmed, rather than be completely hidden. This helps prevent the page from jumping around every time you switch a filter.
In the workspace mode menu, the icon for the Draw Simulator has been modified.
Minor graphical tweaks, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.
January 24
Various minor enhancements to the user interface.
January 22
Decks’ names are no longer required to include an English letter or a digit. A name consisting entirely of non-English typographic characters, including emojis, is now accepted.
The app’s method for assigning URLs to particular decks has been changed. Now each deck URL uses a unique series of random digits instead of a path based on the deck’s name. The benefit of this change is that the URLs remain accessible through browser back navigation even after renaming a deck.
Exceptions are any decks you’ve made before this app update. Those decks will keep their old URLs, but will automatically adapt to the new URL format once you rename them.
January 17
Various minor user-interface tweaks, performance optimizations, and accessibility improvements.
January 16
The app’s automatic updating functionality has been improved for greater reliability.
Minor bug fixes.

Partly redesigned the user interface of the Deck Exporter mode for better usability and clarity.
In the User Guide, explanations about deck archive files had been scattered among various chapters. Most of them have now been consolidated into a subchapter of the Deck Exporter chapter.
Various graphical tweaks. Notably, the app’s background colors are slightly lighter in color.
Minor bug fixes and optimizations.
